French style dessert. “Gratin doux” means “sweet gratin” in French. You can substitute the bread with ready-made sponge. To enjoy more variations, you can add diced canned fruits.

Place half of the sugar and milk in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat until it comes to a boil.

In a bowl, cream together egg yolks and the rest of the sugar. (Photo #1)

Stir in the hot milk mixture to the egg yolk mixture.

Heat the mixture over low heat and continue stirring until it thickens. Be careful not to burn it.

The mixture will become thick in a few minutes. When it is, remove from the heat and continue stirring for a while. (Photo #2)

Run the mixture through a sieve.

Dice bread into 2 cm pieces and place them in a baking dish.

Pour the mixture over and soak the bread. (Photo #3)

Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (356 °F) for about 20 minutes until golden.
