Upside-Down Apple Cake

Austrian style upside-down cake like the French ¡ÈTarte Tatin¡É. To remove the cake from the mold, loosen the edges of the pastry with a knife.

Cream together sugar and butter.

2. Add egg and mix until it emulsifies. (Photo #1)

Add flour and blend well. (Photo #2)

Core, quarter, and slice apple into 2 cm slices.

In a saucepan, melt butter and sugar over heat.

Add apple slices, saute until the sugar turns dark brown and remove from heat. ¡ÊPhoto #1¡Ë

Arrange apple slices in a cake pan. Pour the remaining caramel sauce over the apples. (Photo #1)

Using a pastry bag, card or spoon, pour the batter over and between the apple slices. (Photo #2)

Bake in a preheated oven at 180 ¡ëC (356 ¡ëF) for about 20 minutes. If the surface turns brown but the center is still not done, cover with foil and continue baking. (Photo #3)

Remove the cake from the oven and allow to cool, then loosen the edges of the cake with a knife. Invert onto a platter and remove the cake from the pan.
